Angie goes to Africa

Hello, and welcome to my blog, "Angie in Africa", where I will be detailing my upcoming adventures in South Africa.

The plan is to leave the first week in January 2010, spend roughly four months volunteering at a small college library in South Africa, and come back the last week in April.

I might add some details about planning and preparations before I leave, but that's all pretty boring, I'm sure, so check back in a few months once I'm actually gone for some real adventures.

  2. I'll be in Northern Province, on a game preserve outside of Hoedspruit, near Kruger National Park.

  3. SO exciting! Do you need an unlocked cell phone or any other supplies? I don't know if I still have my power adapters... what plugs do they use there? Let me know.

  4. Jenna,
If you have an unlocked cell phone that would be great. I went to the Verizon store a few weeks ago to ask about going abroad, and they said my phone would be pretty useless overseas, and that the roaming charges to keep my current number would be ridiculous. I was planning on getting one of those pay-as-you-go things (or seeing if the one I used in Italy would be any good there). There are tons of cell phone options at airports. The thing with that, though, is that I'll be in the middle of nowhere, not near a city, so I am not sure how useful a cell phone would be to begin with. I'll just have to wait and see on that one.
The other thing I was going to do was to just use the landline of the college I'll be staying at every once in a while, and stock up on prepaid international phone cards before I go (Christmas/early birthday presents, anyone?).
Also, I've got a free skype account, and I was thinking of upgrading it to a paid one so that I could call out with it.
    All options to be explored.

That was rather lengthy. I'll probably re-post it in the blog itself later.

Anyway, electricity there is 220/230 volts AC 50 Hz. Plugs are 15-amp 3-prong or 5-amp 2-prong, with round pins. So, I'm probably going to need an adapter and transformer. If you've got anything that could help, that'd be awesome.
